You don’t have to go it alone! The Lawrence Hidden Valley Committee is committed to supporting Girl Scouting in the Douglas County area. As part of that effort, we have created a mentoring program for inexperienced leaders to help them be great leaders and to take their girls camping. If you are relatively new to being a Girl Scout leader and/or are not feeling very sure of yourself, we invite you take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that is around you! Learn more about the mentoring program. Hidden Valley Camp, is one of the few privately owned wilderness areas in Lawrence, purchased in 1956 for Girl Scout use. The camp is semi-primitive. It is not a city park. Sturdy shoes are essential, as are a spirit of adventure, curiosity, and wonder. Hidden Valley has shelters, a cabin, trails, campsites, latrines and UACT (Universally Accessible Composting Toilet). Year-round camping is possible—if you prepare yourself and your troop appropriately. There’s wildlife to find, both flora and fauna, if you know when and where to look. The Lawrence Hidden Valley Committee, Inc., a local nonprofit agency, supports the campsite with an annual distribution from the late Al Bromelsick Trust. By providing this camp for the use of Girl Scouts, the committee promotes and provides supplemental support to the Girl Scout movement in greater Lawrence. The Friends of Hidden Valley is a locally based organization that provides support to the camp. They are an independent yet important partner of the Lawrence Hidden Valley Committee. Their mission is to foster an appreciation for the wild space, and promote its use. Through volunteer efforts, the Friends of Hidden Valley sponsor projects that support the care of Hidden Valley’s plants and animals, and provide funding for special projects. |
